September 05, 2023 — The Fall semester is underway at The University of the Southwest, and the new academic year begins with some good news and cause for excitement. Campus appears to be much busier this year as the university realizes a 20% increase in on-campus enrollment. Additionally, USW’s online registration continues to grow consistently with demand for master’s and doctoral programs among working adults.
Amanda Guzman-Appel, Vice President for Student Affairs, oversees campus housing at USW and noted the significant increase in the number of students on campus. “There is definitely a positive energy and strong engagement with students on campus this year. Currently we are at 75% capacity in campus housing (dorms), and we also have a large number of students living in Hobbs and commuting to campus. Overall, we have approximately 300 students on campus this year,” said Guzman-Appel.
USW President Dr. Ryan Tipton commented on the forward momentum that is markedly noticeable at the institution. “We’ve made significant improvements to our student spaces over the Summer. We recognize that students want to have a positive social experience, make lasting connections, and build relationships that last a lifetime. Creating opportunities for that to happen right here in Hobbs is important to our university. The new activity center, outdoor study and relaxation spaces, and the refurbished recreation center each offer special opportunities for USW students to connect and engage with their Mustang family,” commented Tipton.
The total student body at the University of the Southwest is approximately 1,200 students and comprised of both online and on-campus students seeking Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees.
